Well Jay-Z was a subheadliner at Pemberton too. Honestly I think of kanye as 3rd half the time and 4th half the time and Jay-Z is NOT as big as Kanye so I'd say 5th is possible in real life. And since this is a make-believe line-up where ARcade Fire will be 7th, I don't think Jay-Z is too big. Hell put him 5th on the line-up and bump somebody else down. You don't have to change around who plays where. 08 was the first time where the 6 headliners basically played their corresponding spots on the line-up.

I'm not convinced that Jay-Z isn't bigger than Kanye was at the time of Lolla '08.

Not to mention, it's a fucking hour and a half set, against a performer diametrically opposed. He wouldn't get jipped for time. It's not splitting similar fanbases. I don't understand the problem.

But yeah. Insane. I get it.

Jay - Z plays arenas, The Raconteurs plays large theatre's/clubs. I think Jay - Z in that spot is a bit much.

and anyways, we already have a Hip Hop headliner, so why is everyone wanting the Rac's slot to suddenly be a hip-hop headliner as well? A hard rock act would make much more sense.

Okay first people, the whole headliner thing is already messed up. I know we debated it before and made a decision based on a consensus but as this man can tell you

democracy doesn't always equal the right choice. Bjork was above White Stripes at acl in 07 and WS haven't done anything since then. I understand people saying that the WS get a bumb because if/when they play again it will be like a reunion, but I think that's an element that is almost impossible to figure out ahead of time. Also Outkast, well, I get the whole record sales thing but honestly, it could be argued that Kanye was a bigger commercial success than Rage/Radiohead so why didn't he headline over them??? It's the same situation with Cure, Bjork. They have sold fewer records but their commercial records are pretty impressive and they are LEGENDARY artists that have had long, substantial careers.

If it was up to me, scheduling would have been; David Bowie, Bjork, The Cure, Outkast, White Stripes. That's just me and I don't expect people to agree with me.

But this does take me back to my original point; Jay-Z could be argued to be billed 3rd or 6th or anything in between. Let someone nominate him and if he wins, then MAYBE we should debate if he is too big. Hell you guys had Depeche Mode below the Strokes and Arcade Fire on last year's line-up when Strokes/AF have yet to be a top 3 act while depeche mode has.

I think it's because the chance to get middle-tier rap/hip-hop acts on OUtkasts' day was squandered and ppl think it's more likely for ppl to vote on mid-level rap acts if the headliner matches up.

I don't think it's realistic, for all of the reasons stated above. Jay-Z is a legend, and he wouldn't be scheduled for a daytime set at Lollapalooza. If you don't agree, so be it. I have no problem with putting a hip hop act in that spot, but I disagree that Jay-Z is the appropriate act.

That's not how this has worked in the past, and there is no reason to think it will work that way in the future. Just saying.

Jay-Z is much less of a legend than Bjork/Cure yet you mentioned that he would/could probably play over them.

Also people forget that Flaming Lips played the 6:30 slot in 06, when they were a headliner on the initial poster. And David Byrne (much more of a legend than Jay-Z) and John Fogerty played 6:30 at ACL this year while the mars Volta and manu Chao played headliner slots.

People made a mistake last year, doesn't mean we should make a similar mistake again this year.

The difference is Jay-Z has mainstream appeal.

Clever AND original.

you realize I would have made the same argument if this was Beastie Boys we were talking about? Lolla has never had a major focus on hip hop, and you know that's true. this whole racial argument is absolute bullshit, and you know that, so just stop.

While I agree that it has never had a major focus on hip-hop, I also think this fantasy lineup has a lot more things unrealistic about it than the idea of two hip-hop headliners would be. Hip-hop is a huge part of the mainstream, and I don't think it's outrageous to think C3 would decide to capitalize on that to sell tickets.

But yeah, it's lame to make it about black vs. white.

Okay, sure Jay-Z has mainstream appeal but that doesn't mean he should automatically get a top 3/4/5 spot. As mentioned earlier Jay-Z subheadlined at Pemberton despite his mainstream appeal. I understand that Coachella is Coachella and Lolla is Lolla but in 06 had Madonna, their biggest mainstream-act EVER, lister 3rd on her day after Tool and Massive Attack and Kanye, their 2nd most mainstream act, not even listed and ended up playing 4th to last on the mainstage, before Sigur Ros. I know I probably sound like a coachella fanboy (because I am ) but we should still ask ourselves do we want to put mainstream appeal over legend and history?
